Dear Customer, dear Partner,

2011 was a pivotal year for Ferranti and our MECOMS™ solution. We forged important new partnerships, and strengthened existing ones. I’m proud that Ferranti has become Microsoft’s go-to partner for energy and utility companies. Moreover, we released MECOMS™ 2012: the most advanced CIS and MDM solution in the world!

As we move into 2012, the first tangible results of these investments are becoming visible. The first MECOMS™ 2012 implementations will go live soon, as illustrated by DONG Energy’s story. Moreover, successive positive analyst reports and several prestigious new customer wins illustrate the industry’s confidence in our solution.

The utility industry still faces fundamental challenges, as the first truly smart grids are still a thing of the future. However, the image of tomorrow’s utility industry is becoming ever clearer and I hope you share my excitement about it.

But above all, I wish you a healthy, happy and successful New Year.

Enjoy the reading,
Dirk Michiels

Gartner

> MECOMS™ moves up in Gartner Magic Quadrant for MDM

Once again, MECOMS™ is included in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, which ranks the 12 main solution providers for Meter Data Management (MDM).

Since technological innovations, such as smart metering and smart grids, have not yet matured, the MDM market is still immature. Nearly all solutions are niche players and none of the solutions can yet be regarded as a global market leader.

Gartner praises MECOMS™ for its strong estimation and validation routines. Furthermore, the underlying Microsoft Dynamics AX platform, and Ferranti’s network of strong international implementation partners are key advantages according to the analysts.

Therefore, MECOMS™ moves up considerably, both in terms of ability to execute and completeness of vision. Moreover, MECOMS™ is the only utility solution in the world, which is included both in the MDM as well as in the CIS Magic Quadrant from Gartner.

Data must lead to meaningful insights and improve utilities’ effectiveness. Without this, investing in "smart" infrastructure makes little sense.

> Don’t forget why we need to get smart!

After years of speculation and planning, the first roll-outs of smart meters and smart grids took place in 2011. These installations offer the potential to collect massive amounts of granular data about each and every device. As of now, however, most projects hardly leverage the new infrastructure, as they are only able to collect limited amounts of data.

Having the infrastructure in place is only the first step. Utilities around the world face challenges in transporting, storing and processing all the available data.

Smart MeterSmart meters will continuously generate massive amounts of data. Transporting this data can either be done by continuously reading each meter, or in intervals with daily or hourly communication bursts. Spare capacity will also be needed to transport built-up data after outages. Designing the system will depend on the type of customers served, the geography and the availability of communication channels. Regulatory requirements and security requirements will further add to the complexity.

Certified for Microsoft Dynamics AX

> MECOMS™ 2012 passes certification tests

MECOMS™ 2012 has passed the Software Solution Test for Microsoft Dynamics, which is a major requirement for Certified for Microsoft Dynamics status.

VeriTest, a service of Lionbridge, performed independent and rigorous testing on the solution‘s integration with Microsoft Dynamics.

"By requiring the software solution to meet our highest standards, Microsoft is assuring customers that these certified solutions work with their investments in Microsoft Dynamics," said Doug Kennedy, vice president, Microsoft Dynamics Partners. "Microsoft congratulates Ferranti on the software test results and wishes it success in earning the Certified for Microsoft Dynamics designation."

These test results demonstrate Ferranti‘s commitment as Microsoft‘s go-to partner for the energy and utilities market.

MECOMS 2012

> MECOMS™ 2012 Release 1.1

After the successful launch and certification of MECOMS™ 2012, the development team has started work on the intermediary 1.1 release, planned for June 2012. The release is aligned with Microsoft’s release cycle for Dynamics AX, and is mainly focussed on incremental improvements and some new functionality.

Among these are improved contracting for B2B (contract renewal, journaling, integration with forecasting,...), updates to the SEPA payment interface and an improved messaging framework, to ease the creation of local market blueprints. This new messaging framework will be used for the Danish Datahub market interaction (Supplier and Grid Operator). Furthermore, new cubes across the different business domains will provide improved BI and reporting.
